Fine Finish Shop Provides Bathtub Refinishing, Bathtub Re-glazing, Bathtub Resurfacing and Bathtub Liners in Boston

Options for Bathtub Refinishing

Once you decide to do something about your old and worn bathtub, you must choose one of the three ways to proceed:

  1. Purchase a new bathtub - bathtub replacement
  2. Refinish your old bathtub - bathtub refinishing, bathtub resurfacing, bathtub re-glazing
  3. Add a liner to your old bathtub - bathtub liner

Costs of Bathtub Refinishing

Both the bathtub refinishing and bathtub liner options will cost you much less than purchasing a new bathtub. Remember, purchasing a new bathtub will require additional costs to pay for demolition, delivery, plumbing, carpentry and tile work. The total bill can easily rise to over $3000. But your bill for either of the other two options, bathtub refinishing or a bathtub liner, might cost only a quarter of that original amount. In addition, there is a high cost in time required in physically replacing your old bathtub with a new bathtub. Expect to lose at least a week of using your bathtub while all the work is being done.

Overview of Bathtub Refinishing

Bathtub refinishing, on the other hand, can be done in as little as four hours. However, curing must be done, and that takes 24 hours, which is better than a week. And the process is simple.

  • Convert bathroom into a temporary spray booth
  • Remove caulking
  • Cleaned, sanded, and bathroom area masked off to protect floors and walls
  • Apply epoxy primer base for proper adhesion
  • Apply several layers of an aliphatic acrylic polyurethane

Please note:

  • Class A finishes are difficult to duplicate on old, rough surfaces.  Therefore, we will not guarentee a perfect finish on old, rough surfaces.
  • Some chip repairs may incur additional costs.
  • Re-caulking is not included in the price.
  • After refinishing, a bathtub needs at least 24 hours drying time before re-caulking can be done.

Overview of Bathtub Liners

The process of adding a liner to your old bathtub is also very simple, but a little more costly and a little more time consuming. We will come to your home, measure your old bathtub, and then order the liner in your choice of (limited) colors. Delivery could take six to eight weeks. Once it arrives, we will return to your home, remove your fixtures, trim the new liner for a snug fit, install the liner with double-sided tape and other adhesive, recaulk your fixtures. And you're done. Your new tub will be ready to use that night. The cost of the new liner will add to the cost of a simpler bathtub refinishing job.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Bathtub Refinishing and Bathtub Liners

An acrylic bathtub liner is more resistant to the kind of chipping that can occur on a bathtub refinish. Therefore, a bathtub liner will last longer than a bathtub refinish. Some people, on the other hand, feel that a bathtub refinish looks like the original porcelain. Keep in mind, though, that an original porcelain finish is kiln-fired, so a refinish is not going to be as longlasting. But, if cared for properly, both a bathtub refinish and a bathtub liner can last up to 15 years or more.

If the bathtub liner is not installed properly, water can leak under the liner and cause very undesirable smelly, squishy conditions. Therefore, it is imperative that you hire an experienced and conscientious contractor.
