Electrostatic painting is a process of applying paint to a steel surface without the problems caused by overspray. Paint passes through an electrostatically charged gun and onto a grounded surface, thereby preventing the flow of paint to anything other than that particular surface. Electrostatic painting is the best paint application process to use on workplace or residential items. It is the best way to paint file cabinets, steel desks, elevator doors, refrigerators, bathroom partitions, iron railings or any large or small metal object. The procedure is usually done on-site, at the office or in the home. If needed, we can also handle large jobs in our 7000 sq. foot plant. Electrostatic paint may be applied to all metal objects and some plastic objects. But it cannot be applied to wood, rubber, ceramic or glass. The cost of your job will depend on the type and volume of coating or paint that you want applied and the specifications of the piece that you need painted.
The Science of Electrostatic Painting
First, the coating must be engineered according to your needs. Does the item need an outdoor coating? And do you want a flat coat or a glossy coat? Next, the coating is atomized and then blown through an electrostatic gun. As it passes through the gun's nozzle, it pulls an electrostatic charge onto itself. A transformer prevents the charge from returning to its source. Rather, the charge sticks to the coating. As it comes in contact with a grounded surface (i.e., the object being painted), it looks for an opposite charge, to which the coating adheres. As the charge is negated, additional particles of the coating seek other points on the surface being painted that still hold a negative charge, to which they then adhere. In such a way, the surface is uniformly coated. Any coating that is blown past the front of the surface subsequently adheres to the rear, which is also negatively charged(known as wrapping). In this way, there is very limited overspray. We also use Air Motion™ technology to ventilate the job. That is the science of electrostatic painting.
